Kindness and a Smile

This is a story that will warm your heart and if you are anything like me, it may bring a tear to your eye. Kindness is free and by spreading it you can make the day of another person. Just like a smile, you never know what another person is going through. Kym is living with anxiety and what we see as a simple shop visit can make her feel anxious and unsure. Over a period of 9 months, Kym has built the most beautiful relationship with whom she calls ‘The Girls’ at the Rosetta Bakery in Montrose. Kym visits the Bakery twice a week to purchase a salad roll for lunch. The moment she walks through the door she is greeted with the biggest welcome ‘Hello Kymmy’ and the girls make a fuss, asking her how she is, what she has been doing, and then ending her visit with a sneaky little cookie making its way over the counter.

Last month Kym celebrated her 53rd Birthday, ‘The Girls’ were aware this was coming up and had organised for Kym to pop in for a visit. Before the visit Kym had stated that she would like to get ‘The Girls’ something, so we popped into Woolworths and grabbed a bunch of flowers and a thank you card. Kym walks in just before lunch, donning her birthday girl sash, flowers in hand and a big smile, greeted with the loudest ‘Happy Birthday Kymmy!’ Other customers were smiling, Kym was smiling, the girls were singing out to each other to grab the cake and me - well I was trying to hold back the tears of happiness for her. They had made Kym a beautiful sprinkle cake with her name on it. Kym’s birthday request was to have a photo with her girls and that's exactly what she got and of course, the sneaky cookie made its way over the counter as we were leaving. Again, kindness and smiles are free and yesterday, Kym’s smile almost reached her ears thanks to these lovely ladies.

We at Maralinga thank these absolutely beautiful ‘Kym's Girls’ for their generosity and kindness toward Kym, and for making her feel so special.

Thank you to the team at Rosetta Store and Bakery and “The Girls” for welcoming Kym every week with a smile.
